Match fixing is the practice of playing or officiating a game in organized sports with the goal of obtaining a predetermined outcome, which is against the law frequently. Match fixing may occur for a variety of reasons, such as accepting bribes from bookmakers or sports bettors or using blackmail. Additionally, competitors may purposefully underperform in order to receive a future benefit, such as a higher draft pick or an easier opponent in a later round of play. [B] A player might also perform poorly
When gambling is the driving force, match fixing necessitates interactions (and typically financial transfers) between bettors, athletes, team officials, and/or referees. When these contacts and transfers are found, the law or the sports league may decide to take legal action (s). Losing for future advantage, on the other hand, is internal to the team and extremely difficult to demonstrate. Instead of ordering the players actually on the field to purposefully underperform, substitutions made by a coach designed to intentionally increase the team’s chances of losing (such as having key players sit out, using minimal or phantom injuries as an excuse) are frequently cited as the main factor in cases where this has been claimed.

Match fixing, which focuses on smaller events within a match that can be bet upon but are unlikely to prove decisive in determining the game’s outcome, includes point shaving and spot-fixing. For the benefit of sports federations, Sportradar keeps track of the fairness of sporting events. According to Sportradar, up to one percent of the games they watch exhibit suspicious betting patterns that could be signs of match fixing.
